Maasai Mara · Kenya
Guided safaris into the heart of one of Africa's last great wildernesses — led by people who were born here.
Our Story
Xam Fun Travels was founded by local Maasai Samson Edwin Kilakoi Tarkash — Eddy to his friends — who grew up in the Mara under his grandmother's roof, barefoot in the bush, responsible for two younger siblings and two cattle left by a grandfather he never knew. He attended Sekenani Boarding School — chased out more than once when fees ran dry — and finished his primary years through sheer persistence.
Those years wandering the land gave him something no classroom offers. He came within metres of elephants and buffalo on ordinary afternoons. He learned where the rhinos shelter and how the antelope move before rain. That knowledge, earned without a vehicle or a guide, is the foundation every Xam Fun safari is built on.
Eddy started this company for a single reason: too many visitors to Kenya were being overcharged and misled. He wanted to change that — to build something honest, from the ground up, that would let good people experience Africa without being taken advantage of. Xam Fun is that promise, kept one safari at a time.
Start Planning Your TripFrom the Founder
"I felt that I had to do something that would change how tourists were treated — the advantage people took on visitors who came here in good faith. I have started from the very bottom. I want to reach a point where I can help all good people visit Kenya, and anywhere else in Africa, without being cheated out of their money."
— Eddy, Founder, Xam Fun Travels
Eddy grew up walking the bush without shoes or a vehicle. His knowledge of the terrain — where animals drink, where they shelter, which routes the elephants favour at dusk — is not learned from a manual. It is lived.
Every pricing decision, every itinerary, every guide briefing at Xam Fun is shaped by the same conviction: visitors who trust you deserve that trust to be honoured. No hidden costs, no inflated commissions, no shortcuts.
Our Packages
The definitive Mara experience. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — tracked across open savanna and riparian forest with a dedicated guide who knows exactly where to look.
Rise at first light and drift above the savanna as the Mara wakes beneath you. Elephant herds, hippo pools, and a landscape that looks entirely different from the sky — followed by a champagne bush breakfast on landing.
Spend time inside a working Maasai village — not a curated performance, but an honest introduction to the people who have shared this land with its wildlife for centuries. Guided by Eddy and his community.
Why Xam Fun
Mass-market operators move in convoys. We drive alone, stop often, and stay long. Our promise is simple: you will see things others don't, and you will understand what you're seeing.
Every guide is a local Maasai and grew up in the Mara ecosystem. Knowledge here is generational, passed down through tradition and word of mouth, not trained in a classroom.
Guests sleep in our own house, the Tano Bora — Swahili for the Big Five — just 200 metres from the park boundary. You are not in a resort complex. You are at the edge of the wild.
We recently invested in a purpose-built Land Cruiser — the standard by which all safari vehicles are judged. It gives us access to every terrain, every corner of the reserve, and every animal in it.
This company exists to support the people who live alongside the Mara, and to help our guests understand why that matters. Conservation is the reason Xam Fun operate.
The Great Migration
The wildebeest migration is the largest terrestrial animal movement on Earth — and the Mara River crossing is its climax. Crocodiles wait. Lions flank the columns. The water turns white with noise and panic. Nothing in nature prepares you for it.
Crossings are unpredictable. That is the point. Our guides know the crossing sites and read the herd's behaviour — we position early and wait. Patience is the skill. Experience is what makes it work.

"Eddy read the grass like a text message. He spotted a leopard in a fig tree from four hundred metres, on a moving vehicle. I still don't understand how. The whole week felt like that — completely beyond what I expected."
Amsterdam, Netherlands
"We'd done safaris in South Africa and Tanzania before. This was different. The camp is so close to the Mara. The intimacy of Xam Fun is unlike anything else we've ever experienced."
Edinburgh, Scotland
"I'm a wildlife photographer. I've shot in Botswana, Sri Lanka, the Arctic. The migration crossing I witnessed with Xam Fun in September 2023 is the single best set of images I've ever made. Worth every cent."
Tokyo, Japan
Plan Your Safari
We don't take walk-in bookings. Every safari begins with a conversation. We want to understand what you're hoping to experience, your travel dates, group size, and budget — and then we build an itinerary around you.
Send us your details using the form on the right or directly by email at tarkashxam4@gmail.com and Eddy or one of our senior guides will respond personally within 24 hours.
"We only ever take ten guests in camp at once. That is not a marketing line. It is how we protect the experience — for the animals and for you."
— Eddy, Founder
